What Exactly is a Smartphone to Us?
Smartphones have become more than just communication devices for us. They’re like an extension of our bodies, pivotal in our work, leisure, and daily activities. However, this indispensable status comes with a cost.
What Happens When We Overuse Our Smartphones?
Long periods of smartphone use can saturate our eyes with blue light, causing sour and dry eyes, a trend that seems to only worsen with time.
What Role Does the Eye Protection Mode on Our Smartphones Play?
With the “eye protection mode” becoming a feature on almost every smartphone available today, more people have started to keep their eyes glued to their screens regardless of the time, under the belief that their eyes are being protected. But can the eye protection mode genuinely protect our eyes?
How Does the Eye Protection Mode Function?
The principle of the eye protection mode is to protect vision from the perspective of blue light prevention. Blue light is a visible light with a wavelength of about 400-500 nanometres, frequently found in our daily lives. Most home LED lights, incandescent bulbs, LCD TV screens, and smartphone screens all emit blue light. Due to its high energy and short wavelength, blue light can penetrate the lens of the eye and reach the retina, causing oxidative reactions to increase and harmful free radicals to form, ultimately damaging our eyes.
Can the Eye Protection Mode Truly Protect Our Eyes?
While the eye protection mode does filter out some blue light, making our eyes feel less tired, other light can still stimulate and harm our eyes. The effectiveness of the eye protection mode is similar to adding ginseng to cola or wolfberry to beer – it can only relieve fatigue somewhat.
What Can We Do to Protect Our Eyes Better?
Blinking often, spending time gazing into the distance, practicing eye exercises, applying hot compresses to the eyes, maintaining a healthy diet, and participating in outdoor activities can all contribute to eye health. Reducing overall screen time, however, remains the most recommended method of protecting your eyes.
Remember, our eyes are the windows to our soul, and taking proper care of them should be an integral part of our daily routine!
